The Power and Problem with Money

Wild Abundance

Maybe part of the problem with money is that we try to figure it all out in isolation? Perhaps we need to collaborate on a mass exorcism of the illusions and limitations of our existing relationship with money?

After all, money was invented by man. Why not reinvent it or at least the way we relate to it? Everything is in relationship to everything else. In the same way that all your body systems work in concert, and planetary rhythms are intricately orchestrated, money is an essential energy of exchange, but not the ONLY element in the relationship.

In her book, the Soul of Money: Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Life, Lynn Twist talks about a concept called sufficiency. It's an invitation to look at money from a different perspective… a mature, collaborative context that brings the responsibility back on our doorstep:

Sufficiency is an act of generating, distinguishing, making known to ourselves the power and presence of our existing resources, and our inner resources…. if we look around us and within ourselves, we will find what we need. There is always enough.

Lynn gives plenty of examples, through her work with The Hunger Project, demonstrating that giving money to ‘those in need' actually disempowers them. Just dumping money, or aid, in someone's lap doesn't constitute a responsible use of resources. Yes, let's contribute, but lets not forget to collaborate. The projects that created sustainability, in places like Bangladesh and India, were brought about through collaborative engagement and solutions from benefactors and recipients alike.

Lynn discovered that communities who suffered from scarcity – whether lack of water, food, income or infrastructure – were able to activate their insight and ingenuity to create sustainable solutions once their benefactors partnered with them!

So, it's not about scarcity. Remember that your greatest abundance is sourced from within AND that partnering with others will awaken your creative essence. It's not about ‘getting more money.'  It's about accessing your inner abundance. In partnership you access your abundant, creative nature more readily. It's already here, folks!
