5 Coach Approach Elements to Support Your Shifts

What do we mean by using a ‘coaching approach?’ We define this as intentionally utilizing the transferable elements of coaching in other conversations wherever they might be appropriate and helpful.Some of these transferable elements of coaching include a focus on:→ learning→ what’s wanted→ the present and the future→ growing self-awareness and personal responsibility→ providing both support and challenge(These are all in addition to the skills of active listening, questioning that provokes ‘aha’ moments, being present and the ‘beginner’s mind' among other coaching skills, all of which, will make a positive contribution to any human interaction.)1. Ask Open-Ended Questions. Use open-ended questions that have an unpredictable answer (instead of a yes or no question that leads to specific answers). For example, an open-ended question would be: “What can you tell me about this situation?” instead of the closed, “Did you do X or Y?” An open-ended question will not guide the discussion, but rather invite discussion and ideas.2. Engage with Curiosity. Some of the best inquiries begin by being genuinely curious. If you struggle with being curious, try silently starting your questions with, “I’m curious…” 3. Look for the Possibilities. Brainstorm possible outcomes to your current challenge. Get comfortable with the notion that there are no right or wrong answers, only different pathways to move you along to your desired destination.4. Make a Commitment. What next steps are you committed to taking? What plan can you create to get you there?What’s your timeline for getting this underway? “What would help?” or “what would make it easier to commit to your plan?”5. Partner for Accountability. Do you want someone to check in on your progress?” or, “What do you need to help you stay on track with that plan?”
